Evidence for Phase Transition in Nerve Fibers, Cells and Synapses
نویسنده
چکیده
By examining rapid changes in the volume and temperature during excitation of a large number of excitable cells and tissues, we have shown that the excitation process is invariably accompanied by swelling and heat production in the superficial protoplasmic layer. By comparing the behavior of a model system (synthetic anionic gels containing both Caand Naions) with that of nerve fibers under comparable environmental conditions, we have demonstrated that the onset of an action potential is a reflection of a discontinuous volume transition in the superficial layer of nerve cells and fibers. Evidence for the existence of a firstorder phase transition (involving volume and temperature changes) in nerve cells, fibers and synapses is presented.

متن کاملMembrane fusion/repair in nerve cells: a biophysical application in spinal cord injuries regeneration
Cell membrane has a critical and vital role in functioning and existence of nerve cells that form central nervous system (CNS) in mammals. Disruption of nerve membrane that normally occurs following an accident injuring spinal cord is known to be the major cause of paralysis. In most occasions, spinal cord injuries are not leading to complete cut in spinal cord fibers but are known to cause cru...

متن کاملEffect of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells Transplantation on Nerve Fibers of A Rat Model of Endometriosis
Background Endometriosis is a common, benign, oestrogen-dependent, chronic gynaecological disorder associated with pelvic pain and infertility. Some researchers have identified nerve fibers in endometriotic lesions in women with endometriosis. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have attracted interest for their possible use for both cell and gene therapies because of their capacity for self-renewal ...
متن کاملMouse taste buds release serotonin in response to taste stimuli.
Cell-to-cell interactions and synaptic integration may occur within taste buds prior to signals being exported from these peripheral sensory organs to the CNS (Roper, 1992; Kaya et al., 2004). In principle, these interactions could include chemical and electrical synapses between taste cells and synapses from taste cells to sensory afferent fibers. Knowing which transmitters are released at syn...
